Yellow sapphire, known in India as Pukhraj, is a golden variety of corundum, the same durable mineral family as ruby and blue sapphire. Its colour ranges from pale lemon to rich canary and golden honey, created by small amounts of iron. Sri Lankan (Ceylon) yellow sapphires are especially admired for their bright, clean lemon tones, while Thai and African stones often lean warmer and deeper.
In Jyotish, Pukhraj is the gem of Brihaspati, or Guru, the planet Jupiter. Jupiter is the great benefic of Vedic astrology, the teacher of the gods and the karaka of wisdom, dharma, children, wealth and, for women, the husband. It is no surprise that yellow sapphire is among the most requested navaratnas in India, traditionally worn for guidance in education, finances, marriage and spiritual growth. Many families gift it at important milestones, from starting college to getting engaged.
Because good Pukhraj is in high demand, the market is full of imitations, from yellow glass and citrine to lab-grown sapphire and surface-diffused stones. Look for a clean, eye-bright stone with natural inclusions under magnification, and buy it with a GII, IGI or GIA certificate that notes whether it is unheated or heat-treated. Set it in gold with an open back so it touches the skin, and wear it with patience rather than expecting overnight change.

Yellow Sapphire in Vedic astrology
Pukhraj is the ratna of Brihaspati, the guru of the devas and the most benevolent of the navagrahas. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, is exalted in Cancer, and signifies knowledge, dharma, wealth, children and the spouse in a woman's chart. Classical texts describe the finest yellow sapphire as smooth, transparent and the colour of the kaner (oleander) flower. It is traditionally recommended for Sagittarius, Pisces, Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio ascendants, and astrologers often suggest it when Jupiter is weak yet rules favourable houses.
✓ Who should wear Yellow Sapphire
- Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants, for whom Jupiter is the lagna lord
- Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio ascendants, where Jupiter rules favourable houses
- People seeking traditional support for marriage or education, after a chart review
- Those running Guru mahadasha or antardasha with a well-placed Jupiter
✕ Who should avoid it
- Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants are often advised caution
- Anyone wearing diamond, emerald, blue sapphire or hessonite without an astrologer's guidance
- People for whom Jupiter rules difficult houses (such as the 6th, 8th or 12th) should seek a detailed reading first

Yellow Sapphire FAQs
Is Ceylon yellow sapphire better than Bangkok?+
Ceylon (Sri Lankan) yellow sapphires are known for a bright, clean lemon colour and are often preferred in Jyotish. The trade term Bangkok usually refers to stones from Thailand or Africa, which tend to be deeper and warmer. Both can be genuine. A lab certificate matters more than the origin label a seller uses.
Is yellow sapphire good for marriage?+
In Vedic astrology Jupiter is the karaka for the husband in a woman's chart and for wisdom and blessings in general, so Pukhraj is traditionally recommended when marriage seems delayed. Whether it suits you depends on Jupiter's placement and house lordship. An astrologer will also consider Venus and the seventh house before advising.
Can I wear yellow sapphire and diamond together?+
Traditionally this is avoided, because Jupiter and Venus are considered rival teachers in Jyotish, Guru of the devas and Shukra of the asuras. Many astrologers recommend choosing one or the other depending on your ascendant. If you already wear one, consult an astrologer before adding the other.
What is the best substitute for Pukhraj?+
Yellow topaz and citrine are the most common upratnas for Pukhraj. They are traditionally believed to carry a gentler form of Jupiter's energy at a much lower cost. Choose a clean, bright stone and wear it with the same guidelines as yellow sapphire: gold, index finger, Thursday morning.
Should my yellow sapphire be unheated?+
Many traditional astrologers prefer unheated yellow sapphire, believing it carries the gem's energy more purely. Heat-treated stones are still natural sapphire and are widely accepted, and they cost significantly less. Whatever you choose, make sure the certificate states the treatment clearly, and avoid diffusion-treated or glass-filled stones.
