Ruby, known in India as Manik, is the red variety of corundum and one of the hardest gemstones on earth, second only to diamond. Its colour comes from traces of chromium, which is also why fine rubies can glow almost like embers under daylight. For centuries it has been prized by royal houses from Burma to Rajasthan, and in Vedic astrology it holds the first seat among the navaratnas as the stone of Surya, the Sun.

In Jyotish, the Sun represents the self, the father, authority, vitality and reputation. A well-chosen ruby is traditionally believed to amplify these qualities for people whose charts can carry the Sun's heat: leaders, founders, public-facing professionals and anyone learning to take up space with quiet confidence. Because the Sun is a fiery, assertive graha, astrologers are careful about who should wear it, and a chart reading is always the recommended first step.

When buying, clarity of purpose matters as much as clarity of the stone. Burmese, Mozambique and Thai rubies all have their own character, and many stones on the market are heated or glass-filled. We suggest choosing an untreated or only heat-treated ruby with a recognised lab certificate from GII, IGI or GIA, set so the stone touches the skin, and worn with intention rather than expectation.

Benefits of Ruby

  • Traditionally believed to strengthen self-confidence and a sense of personal authority
  • Associated in Jyotish with recognition, reputation and support from senior figures
  • Worn by many as a reminder to lead with warmth, courage and clarity
  • Believed to support leadership roles in government, administration and management
  • Linked with vitality, motivation and a disciplined daily rhythm in Vedic tradition
  • Often chosen to honour a strong relationship with one's father or mentors

Ruby in Vedic astrology

In Jyotish, Manik is the ratna of Surya, the king of the navagrahas and the karaka of the soul (atma), father, government and fame. Classical texts place ruby at the centre of the navaratna arrangement, surrounded by the other eight gems, just as the Sun sits at the centre of the planetary court. It is traditionally recommended when the Sun is a functional benefic in the birth chart but lacks strength, for example for Aries, Leo, Sagittarius and Scorpio ascendants. Because the Sun is a cruel (krura) graha by nature, astrologers weigh its house lordship carefully before prescribing it.

✓ Who should wear Ruby

  • Leo, Aries and Sagittarius ascendants, where the Sun is traditionally a strong benefic
  • Scorpio ascendants, for whom the Sun rules the tenth house of career
  • People in leadership, politics, administration or public-facing roles, after a chart review
  • Those running a favourable Surya mahadasha or antardasha, as advised by an astrologer

✕ Who should avoid it

  • Taurus, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants are traditionally cautioned, as the Sun is not a friend of their lagna lord
  • Anyone wearing blue sapphire, diamond or hessonite, since the Sun is considered hostile to Saturn, Venus and Rahu
  • People who tend to feel easily overheated or short-tempered should consult an astrologer first

How to check if Ruby is real

Most fakes are red glass, lab-grown corundum, lead-glass-filled low-grade ruby, or cheaper red stones such as garnet sold as ruby.

Loupe inspection (10x magnification)
✓ Real: Fine needle-like silk, feathers or uneven colour zones are usually visible
✕ Fake: Round gas bubbles or curved growth lines point to glass or synthetic ruby
Breath fog test
✓ Real: Fog from your breath clears almost instantly because corundum dissipates heat quickly
✕ Fake: Glass holds the fog for a few seconds longer
Colour under different lights
✓ Real: Colour shifts subtly between daylight and indoor light and may glow red under a UV torch
✕ Fake: Colour looks flat, overly uniform or dead under every light source
Surface lustre check
✓ Real: Even, bright vitreous lustre across all facets
✕ Fake: Glass-filled rubies show patches of different lustre where filler reaches the surface

Ruby FAQs

Which finger should a ruby be worn on?+

In Jyotish, ruby is traditionally worn on the ring finger of the working hand, set in gold or copper so that the underside of the stone touches the skin. The ring finger is associated with the Sun through the Surya mount on the palm, which is why this placement is considered the most suitable for Manik.

Can I wear ruby and blue sapphire together?+

Traditionally, no. In Vedic astrology the Sun and Saturn are considered natural enemies, so astrologers generally advise against wearing Manik and Neelam at the same time. The same caution applies to diamond and hessonite. If your chart seems to call for both, discuss it with an experienced astrologer before combining them.

How do I know if my ruby is natural?+

Simple home tests such as a loupe check and the breath fog test can help you spot obvious glass, but they cannot separate natural rubies from lab-grown or glass-filled ones. For a stone you plan to wear astrologically, insist on a certificate from a recognised gem lab like GII, IGI or GIA that states origin and treatment.

Is a heated ruby acceptable for astrology?+

Most rubies on the market are heat-treated, a stable and widely accepted process that improves colour. Many astrologers accept heated stones, while some prefer unheated ones. Glass-filled or composite rubies are generally not recommended for Jyotish use, as a significant part of the stone is not ruby at all.

What is a good budget alternative to ruby?+

Red garnet and sunstone are the most common upratna substitutes for Manik. They are traditionally believed to carry a gentler version of the Sun's energy and cost a fraction of the price. They are also a sensible way to start if you want to observe how Surya's energy feels before investing in a certified ruby.

Manik kaun pahne? (Ruby kisko pehenna chahiye)+

Paramparik roop se Manik Mesha, Simha, Dhanu Lagna walon ke liye anukool maana jata hai. Mahange ratna se pehle kundli dikhana behtar hai.
