Sunstone is a feldspar, most often oligoclase, filled with tiny platelets of hematite, goethite or native copper. When light hits those platelets at the right angle the stone lights up with a metallic, glittering flash known as aventurescence. Good specimens range from pale peach to deep orange-red, and the finest material from Oregon, India, Tanzania and Norway can look almost lit from within.
In India the stone is often called Suryakant Mani, a name that ties it directly to Surya, the Sun. Jyotish treats it as an upratna for the Sun, a more accessible companion to Ruby, which is the classical Navaratna for Surya. Astrologers commonly suggest sunstone for people who need more confidence, recognition or physical vitality but who are not yet ready, or not advised, to wear a full ruby.
Its warm sparkle also makes it a favourite in modern jewellery design. Sunstone sits beautifully in gold, looks striking as a single cabochon, and layers well with pearls or moonstone for a balanced sun-and-moon look. For many wearers it is simply a daily reminder to step forward, speak up and take up a little more space.
Benefits of Sunstone
- Traditionally believed to strengthen the Sun, the graha of self, authority and vitality
- Associated with confidence, leadership and willingness to be seen
- Worn by many to counter low mood on grey, sunless days, as a personal ritual
- In Jyotish lore, said to support relationships with father figures and seniors
- Considered a gentler, affordable companion or alternative to Ruby
- Popular in modern crystal practice for optimism and personal power
Sunstone in Vedic astrology
Surya is the atma karaka in a general sense, the planet of soul, ego, father, government and authority. Ruby (Manik) is its main gem, while stones such as sunstone and red garnet are counted among its upratnas. Sunstone is often suggested when the Sun is weak by sign, placed in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house, or afflicted by Saturn or Rahu. Because it is considered milder than ruby, some astrologers use it as a first step to see how a person responds to strengthened solar energy before recommending the Navaratna.
✓ Who should wear Sunstone
- Leo ascendants, for whom the Sun is the lagna lord
- Aries, Sagittarius and Scorpio ascendants, where the Sun is typically a benefic
- People seeking a milder Sun remedy before wearing Ruby
- Those in leadership, public-facing, government or administrative roles
- Anyone whose chart shows a weak or combusting Sun, on astrological advice
✕ Who should avoid it
- Taurus, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants, unless the chart clearly supports it
- People who already tend towards ego clashes or overheating, per traditional belief
- Anyone wearing Blue Sapphire or Diamond without checking compatibility with an astrologer

Sunstone FAQs
Is sunstone a substitute for Ruby?+
Yes, in Jyotish sunstone is treated as an upratna for the Sun, and Ruby is the Navaratna. Sunstone is traditionally believed to give a softer, slower effect, which is why it is often suggested for people who cannot afford ruby or who want to test solar energy first. Your astrologer can advise on which suits your chart.
Is goldstone the same as sunstone?+
No. Goldstone is a man-made glass with copper crystals added during manufacture. Real sunstone is a natural feldspar whose glitter comes from mineral platelets. Goldstone has an even, confetti-like sparkle from every angle, while sunstone flashes at specific angles. Goldstone is pretty but carries no traditional astrological value as a Sun stone.
Can sunstone and moonstone be worn together?+
Many people pair them as a sun-and-moon balance in bracelets or stacked rings, and in modern crystal practice this is a popular combination. In Jyotish the Sun and Moon are friendly grahas, so the pairing is generally considered harmonious. If you wear a primary gem, confirm the combination with an astrologer first.
Can sunstone get wet?+
A quick rinse or damp-cloth wipe is fine, but avoid soaking it, especially in salt water. Sunstone is a feldspar with cleavage planes, so prolonged water, salt and harsh cleaners can dull it or encourage fractures. Dry it straight away and store it separately from harder stones.
Which day is best to start wearing sunstone?+
Sunday is the traditional day for all Sun stones. Wear it at sunrise, ideally during the Sun hora, after cleansing it and chanting Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah 108 times. Many people also offer water to the rising Sun before putting the ring on.
Suryakant Mani kaun pahne? (Sunstone kisko pehenna chahiye)+
Paramparik roop se Suryakant Mani Mesha, Simha, Dhanu Lagna walon ke liye anukool maana jata hai. Mahange ratna se pehle kundli dikhana behtar hai.
