Gemstone Substitute Finder
Your astrologer said Pukhraj or Neelam but the price is out of reach? Vedic tradition has budget-friendly substitutes for every navaratna.
Ruby (Manik)
A deep wine-red gem with a double role in Jyotish: Sun upratna and traditional Gomed substitute for Rahu.
A glittering golden feldspar linked to the Sun, traditionally worn for vitality, visibility and self-belief.
Tradition holds that an upratna gives a gentler, slower version of the main gem's effect — so it is usually worn a little larger (e.g. 1.5–2× the carat weight) and on the same finger, day and metal.

How the Gemstone Substitute Finder works
What is an upratna?
Upratnas are secondary gems that carry the same planetary colour ray as a navaratna, at a fraction of the price. Classical texts accept them when the primary gem is unaffordable.
Size matters
Because substitutes are considered gentler, they are traditionally worn in a larger size than the precious gem, set in the same metal and finger, and energised on the same weekday.
Quality over size
A clean, natural, untreated substitute is better than a cheap, heavily-treated precious stone. Always ask for disclosure of heating, dyeing or filling.
Frequently asked questions
What is the substitute for Pukhraj (yellow sapphire)?+
The traditional upratnas are yellow topaz (Sunehla) and citrine. They are worn on the index finger in gold on a Thursday morning, like Pukhraj.
What can I wear instead of Neelam (blue sapphire)?+
Amethyst (Jamunia), iolite (Neeli) and lapis lazuli are the common substitutes. They are considered gentler and don't carry Neelam's reputation for fast, dramatic effects.
What is the substitute for Ruby (Manik)?+
Red garnet and sunstone are the usual upratnas for ruby, worn on the ring finger in gold or copper on a Sunday.
Do substitute gemstones work?+
In Vedic tradition they are accepted as effective but milder. Many astrologers actually recommend starting with an upratna to observe how you respond before investing in a precious gem.
