Red coral, or Moonga, is not a mineral at all but the branching skeleton of tiny marine animals called coral polyps. Over many years they build up a dense structure of calcium carbonate, which is cut and polished into the warm, satiny red beads and cabochons prized across India, Italy and Japan. Its colour ranges from pale salmon to deep oxblood, and good coral has a soft, waxy shine rather than a glassy sparkle.
In Jyotish, Moonga is the gem of Mangal, the planet Mars. Mars is the commander of the planetary court and governs courage, physical energy, siblings, land and property, and the ability to take decisive action. When Mars is weak but well placed as a benefic, people often describe a lack of drive, hesitation or difficulty finishing what they start. Coral is traditionally believed to rekindle that fire in a grounded way, which is why it is popular with athletes, entrepreneurs, engineers and people in uniformed services.
Because coral is organic and relatively soft, it deserves gentle handling. Italian and Japanese corals are the most sought after, and a good piece should show fine, parallel growth lines under magnification. Dyed sponge coral and reconstituted coral are common, so ask for a lab report and avoid stones that look suspiciously bright and uniform. Please also buy only from sellers who source coral legally and responsibly.

Red Coral in Vedic astrology
Moonga is the ratna of Mangal, also called Bhauma or Kuja, the son of the Earth in Vedic mythology. Mars is the karaka of courage, younger siblings, land and blood, and is the lord of Aries and Scorpio. Classical guidance favours coral for Aries, Scorpio, Cancer and Leo ascendants, where Mars is a functional benefic or yogakaraka. It is also frequently discussed in the context of Mangal dosha, though astrologers treat that combination carefully and look at the whole chart. The gem is traditionally worn on a Tuesday, the day sacred to Mars and to Hanuman.

Red Coral FAQs
Italian or Japanese coral: which is better for astrology?+
Both are highly regarded. Italian coral from the Mediterranean tends to be orange-red to deep red, while Japanese coral is often a denser oxblood red. In Jyotish, astrologers generally care more about the stone being natural, undyed and free of cracks than about its origin. Choose the piece whose colour, size and certificate suit you.
Is red coral helpful for Mangal dosha?+
Red coral is traditionally discussed as one of the remedies for Mangal dosha, but it is not automatically suitable for everyone with this combination. It depends on your ascendant and which houses Mars rules. An experienced astrologer will usually look at the full chart and may suggest mantra, charity or fasting alongside or instead of the gem.
Why does my coral look dull after a few months?+
Coral is soft and porous, so everyday contact with soap, sweat, perfume and sanitiser slowly dulls its surface. Remove your ring before washing hands or applying cosmetics, wipe it with a damp cloth, and store it separately. A jeweller can gently repolish coral if needed, which restores most of its original shine.
Can red coral be worn with pearl?+
Yes, in Jyotish Mars and the Moon are considered friends, so Moonga and Moti are often worn together when both planets are favourable in a chart. This combination is traditionally believed to balance fiery drive with emotional calm. As always, confirm with your astrologer that both grahas are benefic for your ascendant.
