Hematite is iron oxide, the same mineral that gives red soil, ochre and much of Mars its rusty colour. Polished, it looks like gunmetal silver; crushed or scratched, it reveals a blood-red powder. That hidden red is the source of its name, from the Greek word for blood, and ground hematite has been used as a pigment since prehistoric cave paintings.
In crystal-healing tradition, hematite is one of the most popular grounding stones. Its sheer weight in the hand gives an immediate sense of solidity, and it is traditionally used to steady scattered energy, build resolve and stay practical under pressure. Its iron content, red streak and association with strength and action lead many astrologers who work with modern crystals to connect it with Mars (Mangal).
One important warning for buyers: most shiny, magnetic 'hematite' bracelets sold online are not natural hematite at all. They are a synthetic magnetic material often called hematine. Natural hematite is only weakly magnetic. We explain how to check with a simple streak test below. Real hematite is also sensitive to water, which can cause rust spots, so keep cleansing dry and gentle.
Benefits of Hematite
- Traditionally believed to ground scattered thoughts and restless energy
- Associated with Mars qualities of courage, determination and follow-through
- Kept by athletes and students in crystal practice as a focus and stamina reminder
- Believed to help build confidence before competitions, interviews and exams
- Used as a protective stone in modern tradition to deflect negative energy
- Linked with practical, action-oriented thinking when you feel stuck
Hematite in Vedic astrology
Red coral (Moonga) is Mars's classical ratna, with carnelian and red jasper among the commonly used upratnas. Hematite is not part of the classical lists, but modern Vedic-crystal practitioners associate it with Mangal because it is an iron mineral, because iron is traditionally Mars's metal, and because its streak is blood red. Mars is the commander among the grahas, ruling Aries and Scorpio and governing courage, energy, siblings, land and competitive drive. Hematite is usually suggested as a gentle grounding support rather than as a formal Mangal remedy.

✕ Who should avoid it
- People with a very aggressive or overheated Mars may want an astrologer's advice first
- Anyone with a pacemaker or implanted device should avoid magnetic 'hematite' products
- Those who already feel heavy or sluggish may prefer a lighter stone such as carnelian

Hematite FAQs
Is magnetic hematite real hematite?+
Usually not. Most strongly magnetic 'hematite' jewellery is a man-made material called hematine or magnetic hematite. Natural hematite is only weakly magnetic. A simple streak test on the unglazed back of a tile tells you a lot: real hematite leaves a reddish-brown line, while most synthetics leave grey or black.
Why is my hematite bracelet rusting?+
Natural hematite is an iron oxide and can develop rust-coloured spots with moisture, sweat or salt. Take it off before bathing, swimming or exercise, and cleanse it with smoke or sound instead of water. If it gets wet, dry it immediately with a soft cloth. Minor spotting can often be polished away.
Can hematite be used instead of red coral for Mars?+
Red coral (Moonga) is Mars's classical ratna, and hematite is not traditionally considered its equivalent. In modern practice, hematite is used as a grounding, Mars-themed support stone. If an astrologer has prescribed coral as a formal remedy, discuss any substitution with them. Red jasper and carnelian are more commonly cited as Mars upratnas.
Is it safe to sleep with hematite?+
Natural hematite is not considered unsafe, but many people find a heavy bracelet uncomfortable overnight, and some find grounding stones make them feel sluggish. If you have a pacemaker or other implanted device, avoid magnetic hematite products entirely and check with your doctor about any magnetic jewellery.
