Yellow topaz is a hard, bright silicate that ranges from pale lemon to honeyed gold and the prized sherry and imperial orange tones. At 8 on the Mohs scale it is tougher on scratches than most coloured stones, and it takes a brilliant, glassy polish that suits everything from sleek solitaires to traditional Indian settings. Brazil, Sri Lanka and Pakistan are major sources.

In India this stone is widely known as Sunehla, a name that simply means golden. Jyotish treats it as the leading upratna for Jupiter, the graha of wisdom, dharma, children and prosperity. Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) is the Navaratna for Guru, but a fine Ceylon pukhraj can be very expensive, so astrologers have long recommended Sunehla for families, students and professionals who need Jupiter's blessings at a sensible cost.

One important buying note: in the Indian market, the word Sunehla is sometimes used loosely for citrine, which is a yellow quartz and a separate stone. True topaz is noticeably heavier than citrine for its size and harder too. Neither is fake, but they are different minerals at different prices, so ask your seller to state clearly whether you are buying topaz or quartz, ideally with a lab report for larger stones.

Benefits of Yellow Topaz

  • Traditionally believed to strengthen Jupiter, the graha of wisdom and expansion
  • Associated with good fortune, generosity and financial growth in Jyotish lore
  • Worn by many as an affordable alternative to Yellow Sapphire
  • Linked to guidance from teachers and elders, and to blessings around marriage and children
  • In crystal practice, associated with optimism and a clear sense of purpose
  • Hard enough (Mohs 8) for daily rings with minimal scratching

Yellow Topaz in Vedic astrology

Guru, or Jupiter, is the great benefic of Jyotish, governing knowledge, spiritual teachers, wealth, marriage (especially in a woman's chart) and children. Yellow Sapphire is its principal gem, and Sunehla, or yellow topaz, is the most widely used upratna. It is traditionally recommended when Jupiter is weak, debilitated in Capricorn, retrograde in a difficult house, or aspected by malefics. Astrologers often suggest Sunehla to young people starting careers or families, since it is believed to bring Jupiter's support in a gentle, gradually building way.

✓ Who should wear Yellow Topaz

  • Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants, for whom Jupiter is the lagna lord
  • Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio ascendants, where Jupiter is typically a strong benefic
  • People advised to wear Yellow Sapphire who need an affordable alternative
  • Teachers, counsellors, lawyers, bankers and students of higher learning
  • Those seeking Jupiter's blessings around marriage or children, on astrological advice

✕ Who should avoid it

  • Taurus, Gemini, Libra and Capricorn ascendants, unless the chart clearly supports Jupiter
  • People wearing Diamond or Emerald, as Jupiter is traditionally unfriendly with Venus and Mercury
  • Anyone wearing Blue Sapphire or Hessonite without a compatibility check

Yellow Topaz FAQs

Is Sunehla the same as Yellow Sapphire?+

No. Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) is a corundum and the Navaratna for Jupiter. Sunehla refers to yellow topaz, an upratna for Jupiter, and is sometimes used loosely for citrine. Topaz is much more affordable than sapphire and is traditionally believed to give similar but milder results.

Is Sunehla topaz or citrine?+

Strictly, Sunehla means golden and should refer to yellow topaz, but many Indian sellers use the word for citrine, a yellow quartz. Both are used as Jupiter substitutes, but topaz is heavier, harder and usually pricier. Ask your seller to state the mineral clearly, and request a lab certificate for larger stones.

Can yellow topaz be kept in the sun?+

Short, gentle sunlight is fine, but avoid leaving yellow, sherry or brownish topaz in strong direct sun for long periods, as some stones can fade. For energising, moonlight or incense smoke is a safer choice. Store it in a soft pouch away from windows when not in use.

Which day and finger are right for Sunehla?+

Sunehla is traditionally worn on the index finger of the right hand, set in gold, on a Thursday morning in Jupiter hora. Before wearing, dip it in raw milk and Gangajal, then chant Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah 108 times while facing north-east.

Is blue topaz also a Jupiter stone?+

No. Blue topaz is not traditionally used for Jupiter and is not a substitute for Blue Sapphire either. Most blue topaz on the market is colourless topaz that has been irradiated and heated to create its blue colour. It is a lovely fashion gem, but choose yellow topaz for Jupiter.

Sunehla kaun pahne? (Yellow Topaz kisko pehenna chahiye)+

Paramparik roop se Sunehla Vrishchika, Dhanu, Meena Lagna walon ke liye anukool maana jata hai. Mahange ratna se pehle kundli dikhana behtar hai.
