Cat's eye, known in India as Lehsunia or Vaidurya, is a variety of chrysoberyl that shows a single, sharp line of light across its dome, like the slit pupil of a cat. This effect, called chatoyancy, comes from countless fine, parallel needle-like inclusions that reflect light in one band. As you rotate the stone under a light, the eye glides across the surface and seems to open and close. The most valued stones are honey-yellow to greenish-gold with a crisp, centred eye.

In Jyotish, Lehsunia is the gem of Ketu, the south node of the Moon. Ketu is the headless body of the celestial serpent and represents detachment, spirituality, past-life karma, intuition, research and sudden, unexpected events. Where Rahu pushes outward toward worldly desire, Ketu pulls inward toward insight and letting go. Cat's eye is traditionally believed to sharpen intuition, offer a sense of protection and help steady the confusing or abrupt shifts associated with an afflicted Ketu.

Like Neelam, Lehsunia has a reputation for acting quickly, and many astrologers suggest a short trial period before wearing it permanently. Choose a natural chrysoberyl cat's eye, not quartz or glass fibre, with a single straight eye that stays centred. A certificate from GII, IGI or GIA should specify chrysoberyl cat's eye, since the name alone is used for several cheaper materials.

Benefits of Cat's Eye

  • Traditionally believed to sharpen intuition and inner perception
  • Associated in Jyotish with protection from sudden setbacks and hidden obstacles
  • Linked with focus in research, coding, occult study and spiritual practice
  • Worn by many to steady themselves during abrupt changes or losses
  • Believed to ease the unsettled effects of Ketu mahadasha when Ketu is favourable
  • Often chosen to support detachment from distractions and unhealthy habits

Cat's Eye in Vedic astrology

Lehsunia is the ratna of Ketu, the tail of the serpent whose head became Rahu after the Samudra Manthan. Ketu is a chhaya graha and the karaka of moksha, spirituality, occult knowledge and past-life karma. Like Rahu, it has no sign of its own and gives results according to its dispositor, house and conjunctions. Cat's eye is traditionally recommended when Ketu is well placed, often in the 3rd, 6th, 9th or 11th houses, during Ketu mahadasha, or when Ketu is linked with favourable lords. Some traditions prescribe a brief trial before permanent wearing.

✓ Who should wear Cat's Eye

  • People running Ketu mahadasha or antardasha with a favourable Ketu, after an astrologer's review
  • Those with Ketu in the 3rd, 6th, 9th or 11th house, as traditionally assessed
  • Researchers, healers, coders and spiritual practitioners whose chart supports Ketu
  • Aries, Scorpio and Sagittarius ascendants in suitable charts, as advised

✕ Who should avoid it

  • Anyone wearing ruby, pearl or yellow sapphire without guidance, as Ketu is traditionally hostile to the Sun and Moon
  • People for whom Ketu sits in the 2nd, 7th or 8th house without supporting factors should seek detailed advice
  • Anyone who notices unusual unease or mishaps during the trial period should remove it

Is Cat's Eye right for your Lagna?

In Jyotish a stone's suitability depends on which houses its planet (Ketu) rules for your Ascendant. Tap your Lagna for the full reasoning.

Cat's Eye FAQs

What makes a good cat's eye for astrology?+

Traditionally, the best Lehsunia shows a single, thin, straight eye that runs from end to end and stays centred as you rotate the stone. The body colour should be honey, greenish-gold or grey-green, with a smooth, well-polished dome. It should be chrysoberyl, not quartz or glass, as confirmed by a lab certificate.

Is there a trial period for cat's eye?+

Many astrologers suggest a short trial, similar to blue sapphire, because Ketu's gem is believed to act quickly. Keep the stone under your pillow or wear it for a few days, and note your sleep, mood and events. If anything feels clearly off, remove it and discuss it with your astrologer before continuing.

Is tiger's eye the same as cat's eye?+

No. Tiger's eye is a form of quartz with golden-brown bands, while true cat's eye is chrysoberyl with a single bright line. Tiger's eye is, however, a traditional upratna for Lehsunia and is often recommended as a gentle, affordable starting point for Ketu. Both show chatoyancy, but they are different minerals.

Can cat's eye help during Ketu mahadasha?+

Cat's eye is traditionally recommended during Ketu mahadasha when Ketu is favourably placed in the birth chart. If Ketu is afflicted, astrologers may prefer mantra, charity and spiritual practice instead. The gem is not a guaranteed fix, so always have your chart reviewed before wearing it.

Lehsunia kaun pahne? (Cat's Eye kisko pehenna chahiye)+

Lehsunia Ketu ka ratna hai; iska phal kundli mein Ketu ki sthiti se dekha jata hai, sirf Lagna se nahi. Pehenne se pehle yogya jyotishi se kundli dikhayein.
