Fluorite is calcium fluoride, and it is one of the most colourful minerals on Earth. Purple, green, blue, yellow and colourless bands often appear in a single piece, which is why multi-coloured material is sold as rainbow fluorite. It grows as perfect cubes and splits cleanly into octahedrons along its cleavage, and many specimens glow blue under ultraviolet light. In fact, the word fluorescence was named after this mineral. Important sources include China, Mexico, England, Spain and South Africa.
In crystal-healing tradition, fluorite is known as the study stone: a crystal for organised thinking, concentration and cutting through mental clutter. That quality of detached, orderly clarity, along with its violet and green colours, leads many astrologers who work with modern crystals to connect it with Ketu, the graha of discernment, spiritual insight and freedom from distraction.
Fluorite is not a classical Jyotish gem and is never a substitute for cat's eye. It is also soft, at just 4 on the Mohs scale, and cleaves easily, so it is better suited to desk pieces, pendants and earrings than to rings worn every day. Keep it out of water, salt and strong sunlight, which can dull its polish and fade its colours.

Fluorite in Vedic astrology
Cat's eye (Lehsunia) is Ketu's classical ratna, and fluorite does not appear in traditional Jyotish texts. Modern Vedic-crystal practitioners associate fluorite with Ketu because Ketu governs detachment, discernment, research and spiritual insight, and fluorite is known in crystal practice as a stone of mental order and clarity. Ketu is the south lunar node, a graha of moksha and past-life wisdom that can also bring confusion or scattered focus. Fluorite is usually recommended as a desk stone or pendant for students and seekers during Ketu periods, not as a formal remedy.
✓ Who should wear Fluorite
- Students and researchers during Ketu mahadasha or antardasha
- Those with Ketu in the 5th or 9th house drawn to study, research or philosophy
- People who feel mentally scattered and want a focus reminder at their desk
- Meditators who want a gentle Ketu-themed stone instead of cat's eye
✕ Who should avoid it
- Anyone wanting a daily ring for rough use, because fluorite scratches and chips easily
- People who want to make gem elixirs, since fluorite should not be soaked in water
- Those already feeling overly detached may prefer a warmer stone such as carnelian or rose quartz

Fluorite FAQs
Is fluorite water safe?+
Not really. Fluorite is soft and has perfect cleavage, so soaking in water, especially salt water, can dull its polish, cause pitting or let moisture into small cracks. A very quick wipe with a damp cloth is acceptable if needed, but smoke, sound, selenite and moonlight are better options for regular cleansing.
Why is my fluorite fading?+
Fluorite's purple and green colours can fade with prolonged exposure to sunlight or strong artificial light. Keep it out of sunny windows, and avoid charging it in the sun. Store it in a shaded spot or a closed display cabinet. Faded colour cannot usually be restored, so prevention matters.
Why is fluorite linked with Ketu?+
Classical Jyotish assigns cat's eye to Ketu, but modern practitioners link fluorite with Ketu because both are associated with clarity, discernment and detachment from mental noise. Fluorite is known in crystal tradition as a focus stone. It is best treated as a supportive study or meditation stone rather than a formal astrological remedy.
Can I wear fluorite as a ring?+
You can, but it is not ideal for daily wear. At just 4 on the Mohs scale, fluorite scratches and chips easily, and rings take a lot of knocks. If you want to wear it, choose a pendant or earrings, or a ring with a protective bezel setting, and remove it before chores or exercise.
Rang Sphatik kaun pahne? (Fluorite kisko pehenna chahiye)+
Rang Sphatik Ketu ka ratna hai; iska phal kundli mein Ketu ki sthiti se dekha jata hai, sirf Lagna se nahi. Pehenne se pehle yogya jyotishi se kundli dikhayein.
