Selenite takes its name from Selene, the Greek goddess of the Moon, and its silky white glow makes the connection easy to understand. It is a form of gypsum, a soft calcium sulphate mineral. Most of the wands, towers, lamps and charging plates sold as selenite are technically satin spar, a fibrous gypsum with a pearly, light-rippling sheen, while true selenite forms clear, glassy blades. Both are gypsum, and both share the same care needs.
In crystal practice, selenite is best known as a cleanser. People rest bracelets, rings and tumbled stones on a selenite plate overnight, place a tower in a room to keep its atmosphere light, or sweep a wand around the body as part of a calming routine. Its association with the Moon (Chandra) is a modern one, reflecting its moonlit appearance and its reputation for peace, clarity and emotional softness.
The most important thing to know is that selenite is very soft, only 2 on the Mohs scale, so a fingernail can scratch it. It also dissolves slowly in water, so it should never be rinsed, soaked or placed in salt. Keep it dry, dust it with a soft brush, and avoid bathrooms and humid windowsills. Handled gently, it becomes a quiet, luminous centrepiece in any space.

Selenite in Vedic astrology
Selenite is not a classical navaratna or upratna; its link with Chandra is a modern association inspired by its name and moonlit glow. In Jyotish, the Moon governs the mind, emotions, rest and the mother, and its traditional gem is Pearl, with moonstone as the best-known upratna. Selenite is used differently: not as a ring prescribed for the chart, but as a household cleansing stone. Many people place their Jyotish gems on a selenite plate on Monday nights, the day of Chandra, while chanting the Moon's beej mantra as a simple ritual of care.
✓ Who should wear Selenite
- Anyone who owns several crystals or gemstones and wants a dry, gentle cleansing plate
- Cancer (Karka) lagna and Moon-dominant people who resonate with calm lunar energy
- People creating a meditation corner or a peaceful bedroom environment
- Those who want a Moon-themed crystal without wearing a ring
✕ Who should avoid it
- Anyone wanting a stone to wear daily as jewellery, since selenite scratches and dissolves easily
- Homes with young children or pets who might chew or lick small pieces
- Anyone planning to keep it in a bathroom, kitchen or humid space

Selenite FAQs
Can selenite get wet?+
No. Selenite is a form of gypsum, which is slightly water-soluble and very soft. Even a short rinse can dull the surface, and prolonged contact causes pitting and dissolving. Clean it with a dry brush or cloth, cleanse it with smoke or moonlight, and keep it away from bathrooms, kitchens and humid windowsills.
How do I use a selenite plate to cleanse crystals?+
Place your tumbled stones, bracelets or rings on a dry selenite plate and leave them overnight, ideally on a Monday or under the full moon. Avoid placing wet items or pieces that have just been washed on it. Dust the plate regularly and keep it on a stable shelf, as it chips easily.
Is selenite the same as satin spar?+
Both are gypsum. True selenite forms clear, glassy crystals, while satin spar is fibrous with a silky, pearly sheen. Most wands, towers and lamps sold as selenite are actually satin spar. They share the same softness and care needs, and both are used the same way in crystal practice.
Does selenite need to be cleansed or charged?+
In crystal practice, selenite is traditionally said to be self-cleansing and is used to cleanse other stones. Many people still place it under the full moon occasionally as a ritual. It should never be cleansed with water or salt, and long periods of direct sunlight are best avoided.
