Opal is a hydrated form of silica, meaning it contains water locked inside its structure, usually somewhere between three and ten percent. Precious opal is built from tiny spheres of silica stacked in orderly rows, and light diffracting through those spheres produces the famous play of colour: flashes of green, blue, orange and red that move as you turn the stone. Australia produces most of the world's opal, while Ethiopian Welo opal has become popular for its bright, affordable fire.
In Jyotish, opal has become one of the best-known upratnas of Venus. Diamond remains the Navaratna for Shukra, but opal's milky, luminous body and shifting colours are strongly associated with Venus themes of beauty, romance, art and pleasure. Many astrologers in India now suggest opal as a primary Venus remedy for people who cannot wear a diamond, and it is one of the most searched Venus stones online.
Opal is also a stone that asks for gentle handling. It is softer than most gems, sensitive to heat and sudden temperature changes, and can develop fine cracks, called crazing, if it dries out or is shocked. Treated with a little care, though, an opal ring or pendant can stay beautiful for generations.

Opal in Vedic astrology
Opal does not appear in the oldest classical gem lists, but it has been embraced by modern Jyotish as a prominent upratna of Shukra. Its luminous, colour-shifting quality is seen as a natural match for Venus, the planet of beauty, relationships, luxury and the arts. Astrologers typically recommend it when Venus is weak or afflicted, or when the person runs a Venus mahadasha and needs support. It is regarded as gentler than Diamond and is often preferred for people who want Venus benefits in a softer, more intuitive form.

Opal FAQs
Is opal a good substitute for Diamond?+
Yes. In modern Jyotish, opal is one of the most popular upratnas of Venus and is often suggested when a diamond is unaffordable or not suited to the person. It is traditionally believed to bring Venus benefits in a softer way. Check with an astrologer that Venus is supportive in your chart first.
Can opal get wet?+
Solid Australian opal can be wiped with a damp cloth, but it should not be soaked. Doublets and triplets can separate if water gets into the glue, and Ethiopian Welo opal can absorb water and turn temporarily clear. Keep all opals away from long baths, pools and cleaning chemicals.
Why did my opal crack?+
Opal contains water, and sudden changes in temperature or humidity can cause fine surface cracks called crazing. Heat, strong sunlight, hot water and very dry storage are common triggers. Store opal in a soft pouch away from windows and heaters, and avoid wearing it while cooking or in saunas.
Is it true that opal is unlucky?+
The idea that opal is unlucky largely comes from a nineteenth-century European novel and later marketing rivalry, not from Vedic tradition. In Jyotish, opal is simply a Venus stone and is considered auspicious for those whose charts support Venus. As with any gem, suitability depends on your chart.
Which is better for Venus, Ethiopian or Australian opal?+
Both are natural opal and both are used as Venus upratnas. Australian opal is generally more stable and less water-sensitive, while Ethiopian Welo opal is more affordable and very bright but can absorb water. For a ring worn daily, many jewellers prefer solid Australian opal.
